  • Blacksburg Middle School is proud to announce that the Band Program has been recognized as a Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association (VBODA) Honor Band for the 2025–2026 school year.
  • 2026 Blue Ribbon School - Both band and Choir programs received Superior Ratings at Assessments.

To earn this distinction, bands must receive Superior ratings at District Concert Assessments for two ensembles and have students selected to participate in All-District Band events for their district. We are excited to share that the Blacksburg Middle School Band program successfully met all of these requirements.
Bands receiving Superior ratings at District Concert Assessments are recognized with one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon school band programs by VBODA.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many teachers who worked with our scheduling requests to allow for group rehearsals and practices. We are also grateful to our athletic programs and coaches who were willing to adjust schedules to accommodate performance dates and times. Their cooperation helps ensure that students are not placed in the difficult position of choosing between important activities, allowing them to fully participate in both academics and extracurricular opportunities.

This honor reflects the dedication and collaboration of our students, staff, families, and the entire Blacksburg Middle School community. As Dr. Johnson, principal at Blacksburg Middle School, often says, “It takes a village,” and I certainly agree. I want to extend my sincere appreciation to everyone who played a role in making our music program successful. Your support helps ensure that our students continue to thrive and allows our program to be recognized once again as one of the best not only in our district, but across the state.

​The Band Program at Blacksburg Middle School is made up of over 250 of the most dedicated and talented students on campus, each expressing their artistry through our performance ensembles. Our program has been recognized multiple times for excellence in music education. Committed to providing one of the finest middle-level instrumental music experiences in Virginia.
We are fortunate to have the strong and ongoing support of our parents, school administration, and the greater community as we pursue this goal. Thanks to their dedication—and the hard work of our students—our ensembles have earned recognition at the local and state levels.

International Night at BMS 

​November 18th, 2025
On October 6th, Auburn High School hosted the Montgomery County All-County Middle School Band event, a remarkable showcase of young talent. This unique ensemble brought together approximately 90 students from all Montgomery County middle school band programs for a day of music-making under the baton of Dr. Nathan Irby, Virginia Tech’s new music education professor.
Blacksburg Middle School was proudly represented, with our students delivering an outstanding performance at the evening’s culminating concert. Their professionalism and musicianship shone brightly. Participating in this intensive and musically enriching event is a true honor, reflecting the dedication and talent of all involved.
